Indian Govt plans to double port handling capacity

According to the Union Ministry of Shipping, Indian government is planning to set up 50 more new minor ports to support the growing cargo traffic. It is estimated that traffic will go up to 1.0 billion tonnes by 2012. Currently, capacity is totally inadequate. Average turnaround for Indian port is 3.85 days, whereas it is just 10 hours in modern ports like Hongkong so building new ports will provide a breather
